INVASION IN RIO  Email

We all know the quest for great hills with smooth curves can become a healthy obsession, but there's always certain hills that just aren't safe enough to skate.  With this article, we're stoked to bring you the story of Silverfish Longboarders in Brazil that patiently waited for what they knew could be epic roads, but that were in the middle of a neighborhood controlled by gangsters that make the Baltimore Meter Maid look like a teddy bear -- until November, 2010, when the Brazilian government routed them out.  The government troops set up the longboarder for their own...

INVASION IN RIO!

(Intro by Guto Jimenez)  Don’t get fooled by blue araras in movie theaters – Rio de Janeiro aka “The Wonder City” is a cauldron of beauty and chaos.  The beautiful beaches, gorgeous girls and jaw-dropping scenery have a reverse side on the opposite part of the city, where some areas are dominated by drug gangs. The largest of these infamous areas is the Complexo do Alemão, which was the scenario of the best planned military action in modern Brazilian history last November when the National Forces (local and Federal polices, plus the Army and the Marines) invaded the area and brought peace back to the inhabitants.

Just a couple of months later, a group of skateboarders discovered some raw, steep, hellbent roads on those hills. The mission was to plan and execute another invasion, using longboards as weapons and extremist skills as survival kits. Bruno “noBru” Ribeiro was one of the riders who were the pioneers on the location, and this is how he tells us about the assignment. Read the story and see the pictures carefully – and control your feet if you can!

And now, a message from the crew of hippies and environmental greenheads working to put together skateboard events on Earth Day...

 Greenskate 2011

Active Image

It all started in Calgary in 2007. The heart of oil country is an approriate place to begin a worldwide movement that highlights longboarding as an environmentally friendly form of transportation. Four years later, Greenskate is a global event. No other longboard event is as big as Greenskate, period.

In 2010 we had 52 events, on every continent of the globe except for Antarctica (and we're working on that!). Events ranged from over 200 participants to less than a dozen. All told, over 1200 people took part in Greenskate 2010.

Greenskate started when a small group of dedicated community organizers planned a longboarding event to coincided with Earth Day.

Planet Earth - March 21, 2011

Salutations Silverfishers,

I’d like to welcome all of you to the new skateboard magazine dedicated to longboarding: the name is Wheelbase, the site is wheelbasemag.com, and we love shredding.

If you’re wondering who we are, we are you. What I mean is: we are actual dedicated skateboarders who love riding and want to spread the badassery of longboarding to the world.

Our ultimate goal is to grow longboarding on a global scale, and in the longterm (critical concept), by uniting the various and thriving communities that are growing on their own everywhere. We have our work cut out for us no doubt, but Wheelbase is up for the challenge.

“Passion - Perseverance - Respect – Ambition – Innovation”

These may be the first words that would come across your mind after having heard Laurent Golay speaking about LGS and his personal story. You would discover a deep passion that drove him to develop his first Longboards in the late 90’s, followed by Slalomboards in early 2000 and finally completing the product line by producing his own Skateboards 6 years ago.

Long Treks: The Chase and Individual Struggle to Potosi  Email
Lørdag, 19. marts 2011 04:45

In this final episode of the Long Treks adventure, Adam Colton makes an escape. Aaron and Paul fuel up on cookies to catch Adam.  The chase is on, but gastro sickness attacks Adam and Aaron and they are too weak to catch him.  The team all gets split up.  The stretches are long with little to no food.  Paul and Adam rejoin and finish the trip to Potosi.  Aaron fights a crazy battle of sickness and gets close to Potosi but gets picked up by a Police officer and gets a ride into town.  The team is finally together in Potosi, eating like Kings...

The Chase and Individual Struggle to Potosi

EPISODE 15 , The Finish.

The ending part of the trip can’t fully be explained in words.  It was a complete struggle for all of us.  Like the world had to throw one more huge obstacle in front of us right before Potosi.  My days skating alone where the toughest days of the trip.  I was so sick, I could only skate for 30 minutes at a time and take a rest and go diarrhea.  I even squirted in my underwear twice, no joke, so I had to put on the underwear that had less filth on it haha, sick I know!  It was painful going.  Aaron had his own horrible struggle, battling intense stomach cramps and squirts, napping on the side of the road to regain strength and motivation. Paul and I eventually rejoined.  It was nuts.  I was sitting in a café eating; I thought I had seen Paul behind me in the distance as a spec before I made my decent into a town.  So I was waiting but, no Paul and a horrible downpour & thunderstorm was going on, I was like crap, those boys are getting dumped on.  Sure enough, an hour or so later I see Paul blazing by the café, I run out and yell to him and he stops.  We are rejoined. Check out more, below.
